Fitting a Toby oil control valve to an Aga or Rayburn cooker
This is a precise operation and really needs to be carried out by an OFTEC registered engineer. But those qualified to work on range cookers are getting fewer and fewer in 2021 so these notes are guide only. The Toby is simply a "carburettor" which precisely meters the flow of oil from 4ccs a minute to 8 (Aga) or 13 ( most Rayburns)
- The valve must sit EXACTLY true level as the oil depth inside has to correspond to the oil in the burner to the millimetre
- the valve is usually mounted on the left side panel of the cooker but could be on a rear wall or cupboard are long as within 1.8 metres (6ft)
- The connection is normally via a 10mm copper pipe, into the 1/4" BSP threaded female inlet. outlet is usually 6 or 8mm pipe.
- a fine (10 micron) oil filter should be fitted in line before the oil reaches the Toby valve
- a KBB remote sensor should be fitted both OUTSIDE the house, rated at 65oC, with the heat sensor inside the house
- a KBB remote sensor should be fitted on the oil supply (can be inlet or outlet pipe) close to the valve, with the sensor inside immediately in front of the lift off inner burner door. This is rated to cut off the oil if the "cigar size" sensor exceeds 90oC.
- if an electric head version the thermostat must be located inside the top oven -this is normally used in the Aga but can be used on either cooker when converted from another fuel
- a filter is fitted inside the Toby, accessed through the end cap. This should be cleaned on service.
- Unlike the BM the cut off lever at the front of the valve doesn’t "click" when turned off.
- the knob only travels from 6 o'clock to 11 o'clock -do NOT try to turn it beyond these settings.
Once installed the depth of oil should be checked very carefully, in the burner, as well as the flow rate
The accepted method of measuring the flow is to time the output over 3 minutes with the oil filling a test tube with graduations on the glass.
The Toby is factory set but it’s not unknown for the valve to require adjustment .This can be done via the top screws ,usually painted red to show they are set.
the cooker should be lit within 10 minutes of turning on the oil or the burner will absorb excess oil (its cast iron material is porous) then I suggest the valve is turned to the lowest setting so the oil is reduced in the burner.
